Once in a great while - about as often as Halley's Comet - a book comes along which stirs the soul and rattles your heart; a book which can transcend race, gender, age, place and time. This is such a book. Rueben Brock is a magnificent writer; his verses poetic, his theme universal. His autobiogrophy tells the story of growing up black and young without a father, and the affects it can have on a child. Through this story I learned the prejudice of racism, related with the struggle of growing up with the loss of a parent, and the will to live life. This story touched my heart an I feel that there are many lessons that can be learned from this story.
I enjoyed reading the book. I find many similar things and feelings about my own experience growing. Although I still have my father around he was not involved in my life after age 10 or so. Prior to that it was much the same as your experience. My father was this perfect person so to speak. It really was not until I really started to dig and even in recent conversations with my mother that I discovered he was much less perfect than I imagined. I think this concept of the perfect father has done great damage to developing young men. As you state the inability of a child to see themselves imperfect becomes unacceptable internally and leaves them in a perpetual failed state. I feel the greatest message in this book is summarized in the this statement. When a human measures themselves by the teachings of another human, not by logic and reason, they will inevitably fail at becoming a better version of those who came before them. Quite possibly as a result of this realization they may cause their offspring to become entirely a new humanity unseen prior to their own self discovery of what is.
"A Young Man's Wisdom" is the autobiographical Account of Reuben Brock's rise to first stage manhood. As such, his story is the coming of age story of men of all races. However, certain aspects of Reuben's story will keenly resonate amongst a certain socio-economic class of Black folk.
I approached reading "A Young Man's Wisdom" with goodly amount of trepidation. For I've known Reuben Brock, man and boy. The first conversation I recall having with him was in the psych ward after his brush with suicide.
And while I don't know his mother, and family well; I have never the less met them, and talked with them. I spent almost eleven years in the small Western PA town from which they spring. So, if I didn't like "A Young Man's Wisdom", or was critical in any way; my direct nature and my calling as truth sayer would compel me to say so. And I didn't want to hurt Reuben's feelings.
Happily, the book is well written. Reuben has the rare gift of saying much with few words. Thus the book is spared the mistake of many first time authors of filler chapters just to make the book longer.
The book's strength and value will be particularly poignant to those who've had a loved one commit suicide, or who've tried suicide themselves, or who've thought about suicide. That's a pretty wide swatch of population.
The most powerful section of the book, for me, is where Reuben describes his mental state as he calculates his slide toward taking his own life. My reaction while reading it was a visceral fear, afresh for Reuben.
It reminded me of the confusion and pain I saw in his eyes while in the hospital psych ward. I thought, "This is too revealing, too risky." Yet it is this willingness to put all of his emotional and mental cards on the table that offers hope to those grappling with suicide.
It is written that you shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free. By acknowledging and facing the demon of his father's suicide Reuben has not only freed himself but others who find themselves in similar circumstances.
Without giving away the neat twist at the end of "A Young Man's Wisdom", the book's title and meaning become clear in a final touching chapter, entitled "Ready, Go." It was powerful enough to make this grown man shed a tear.
This short book is the memoir of nationally certified mental health counselor Rueben Brock. At only 98 pages you could easily read it in just one or two sittings.
The book begins on a very sad note as Brock recalls the evening that his father committed suicide and the consequences that his father's absence had on his young life. Brock describes going through life from age 7 on as he tries to instantly transform himself into the man he feels his father expected him to become. The first half of the book is quite depressing at times as the author struggles with loss and depression. I was brought me to tears more than once, but it is an important part or the journey that Brock has taken.
About halfway through the book the author describes his breakthroughs as an adult and manages to pull his life together. In doing so, he reconciles the expectations that he had placed on himself with his memories of his father and the lessons his own life experiences have taught.
The last section of the book was an inspiring affirmation. Now a father of two, Brock lays out a set of guidelines for young men. Inspired in part by rules that his father laid down but modified significantly these "rules" are an extraordinary personal gift to Brock's son but they also reflect values that all young men should take to heart.
It must have taken a considerable amount of bravery for the author to be so candid in sharing his story. I think the book will inspire others who have faced similar struggles. It might also make a nice gift between fathers and sons.
