Jon Moore A nanotech-enhanced warrior who wants nothing more than a quiet life and a way back to his strange home world. Lobo An AI-enhanced Predator-Class Assault Vehicle, a mobile fortress equipped for any environment from the seabed to interstellar space.

Jon Moore wanted only to relax on the pristine planet of Macken - but Macken was the secret battleground of two megacorporations, both determined to control the local jump gate and the riches of an undeveloped world. Moore was too valuable a tool not to be used, whether or not he was willing.

What the corporations didn't realize was that Moore had a mind of his own and a conscience that wouldn't let him quit until he'd righted the wrong they'd tricked him into making. And Moore had Lobo - or just possibly, Lobo had Jon Moore, because this Assault Vehicle had a mind of its own, too.

Finding allies and enemies among terrorist groups and elite mercenaries, gun-runners and the only kind of government possible on a frontier short on rules and long on riches, Jon and Lobo fight to a climax with a corporate army that can't afford to leave any witnesses. Exotic settings, fast action, real tech, mechanically-enhanced animals - and a beautiful woman who's as deadly as a cobra!

One Jump Ahead Jon Lobo Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mark L Van Name Tom Stechschulte Audible Studios Books

Imagine a galaxy where a mysterious set of gates exists and keeps growing; gates that allow humans to travel faster than light throughout the galaxy...and nobody knows how they work or who built them, and why the number of gates keeps growing...

Imagine a genetically altered retarded man from the planet Pinkelponter (!) who is now brilliant, a former mercenary, and who has a deep abiding relationship with a cloud of nanomachines who live in his body...

Imagine a world where all the machines are AI-enabled and talk to each other like old folks gossiping...

Imagine a tank with a heart and maybe a soul...

Now you have the world of Jon and Lobo in Mark L. Van Name's first novel, One Jump Ahead.

This book rocks.

I wish I could write as well as Mark does.

I am going to nominate this book for the Hugo next year.

If you liked what John Scalzi is trying to do in resuscitating intelligent action science fiction, you will love this book.

Go out and buy it. Selfishly, I want to see more Jon and Lobo stories, and in order to do that, I have to convince you to buy this book. So why are you still reading this review???

One Jump Ahead Jon Lobo Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mark L Van Name Tom Stechschulte Audible Studios Books Reviews

The nice thing about writing a review about this type of book is that to avoid spoilers I can just compare it to others of the same type. In fact I may use this review (with minor tweaks) for other books.

First off If you like this book, I recommend "The Man Who Never Missed" & "Mirror Friend, Mirror foe". They happen to come to mind when I think of this this type.

Basic design The hero has a secret that is both the greatest strength and the greatest weakness. The hero must travel. The hero is haunted by the past. The hero wants to leave the strife filled life behind. The hero can't escape strife, society is unjust and people must be helped. The hero hates violence, but is very good at it. The hero will do good, that soothes the soul, but does not save it from the past.

I just described this book. And quite a few others. Also about 30% of the cowboy shows from the 50s and 60s, Kung Fu (tv series), the Incredible Hulk, and the Bourne movies I've seen.

The problem I have with this type of story (in SF especially) is that the majority are just not put together that well Technology is a big part of them, but not thought through. Enemies are many and powerful, but are so basically incompetent that they couldn't have gotten powerful in the first place. The hero has a BIG secret, that any halfway bright person would notice. The hero has a back story of going through this type of thing (fighting, betrayal, etc.) but wanders around like Bambi on ice.

I noticed one review of this book mentioned "military science fiction". I really don't think this book is. It has that same love of weapons technology that so much of MilSF does. But it really is more a lone wolf (ronin) rather than soldiers (samurai) story.

Bottom line If you want a "Mr. Ronin goes to town" type story, you could do worse, but you could do better with a similar general feel (say "Altered Carbon" or "Broken Angels").
Nothing new. Good for relaxing in mind-down-time. Not worth buying hardback for sequel - wait for paperback.
nice writing and pace. it has great action scenes with enough hard science fiction to make it very interesting. van name is one of the best new authors. enjoy
Good entertainment and though some of the story seemed confused - underdeveloped; it was a good read and am looking for more.
The entire series, a suspenseful S.F. series with interesting technology that's potentially possible, so far has a underlying core theme that addresses some important issues. Namely the militarized mind set, necessary for survival in combat, but out of place in civilian society. Also coping with PTSD. Finally children in peril and their need for protection.
This book has a quick overall pace, good storyline, good characters, witty dialogue and is one I want to read the sequel to. The only negative for me is all the self doubt, second guessing and rationalizing by the lead character with regard to killing in battle, his past etc. I just wanted to slap him and say "DUDE! You were a soldier and people are trying to actively kill you NOW. Get your gun and get over it!"
This book represents very good writing and imagination. The main character (Jon) can be labeled as the good guy with a past or perhaps passively looking for redemption. The plot is similar to a "who done it" novel in which Jon is trying to figure out who has placed a bounty on his head and trying to do the right thing to without too much collateral damage. Would definitely recommend to anyone that reads science fiction.
